A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, released September 19th in the US and rated R, stars Margot Robbie as an ambitious women who meets an equally as ambitious man, played by Colin Farrell, and take off on a journey through time. The man, David, has dreams that he wants to realize in his life, and finds the means to explore them through renting a time-travelling car. He links up with the woman, Sarah, who is down to help him find the truth in his life.
The film takes aim at modern trends by following its own trend, going against the culture of the fast life, and succeeds at making the moments last. The film feels like everything is worthwhile. Exploring various scenic parts of life that have their own beauty to reflect on, the film takes a journey through the mind to see what’s really happening inside of the heads of dreamers.
The film takes off from its own basis in fantasy. It strays from the traditional paths that filmmakers take, and swerves off into tangents that are just as relevant as the plot is. Modern filmmaker Kogonada directed the film, and shows off his talents for making a cohesive and practical plot into a big screen adventure. Kogonada’s triumph seem endless, and he tells his tales through active, thoughtful, and emotional playfulness.
The playground of thought seeps deeper into the realms of dreams the further along the journey goes. Collecting upon the ideology that it had established through the baseline in time travel, and moving towards further development with quirky, ironic jabs at the nature of time travel. The clouds hovering above the stars lift at points and settle at others, with their good nature shining through the darkness of their ambitious minds.
The film has proponently decided that it has a purpose to serve, and it serves its purpose. It holds together what’s true in human nature, and dissolved into a dissection of what not to expect along the road the mind takes you. The metaphor of the road is established through the visual cues and signals given along the literal road that they take in the film.
Anything that could fill the time has been passed on, and everything stays relevant. The delineation of the plot moves quickly and poignantly to model the truth behind the story that it’s trying to tell. It moves to explain what it means to want things in life, and explains how to get them. Teaching as many lessons as it asks questions about what life means to the people living it.
